While Joseph’s brothers were having lunch, they saw some travelers in the distance on their way to Egypt.
Then Judah, one of Joseph’s brothers had an idea. “How about selling Joseph to those traders,” he said. “Then we won’t have to kill him. After all, he is our brother.”
All the others agreed, so they pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him to the traders for twenty pieces of silver.
Joseph was taken to Egypt where he was sold as a slave to Potiphar, one of the king’s officers.
What am I worth?
When you think of what a person is worth, twenty pieces of silver doesn’t sound like much. What do you think you are worth?
People often judge a person’s worth by who they are, what they can do, or what they own. Those who are popular, talented, and rich often have bodyguards to protect them. They make front-page news and are fussed over by those who seek their favor.
Do you know that you have been bought by someone for a lot more than twenty pieces of silver? The price that was paid for you is far more than all the silver and gold in the whole world! You have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus because you are worth that much to Him.
