Memorize: John 14:31

« But the world must know that I love the Father. So I do exactly what the Father told me to do. »

Read: Luke 22:39-46

Jesus and His disciples left the house and went to the Mount of Olives, a hill east of Jerusalem. When they arrived at their usual spot, Jesus said to the disciples, “Pray that you will not be overcome by temptation.”

Then Jesus walked on a little way and knelt down to pray. “Father,” He said, “if You are willing, please take away this cup of suffering so that I don’t have to drink it. But I want to do Your will, not Mine.”

An angel from heaven came to Jesus and strengthened Him, for He was in such agony that His sweat dripped onto the ground like drops of blood. And He prayed even more earnestly.

Then Jesus got up and went back to the disciples. He found them asleep, worn out by their sadness. “Why are you sleeping,” He said. “Get up and pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted.”

Did Jesus have to die?

Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to take away the sin of the world. He had prepared His disciples for what lay ahead. Late that night, there in the garden, Jesus prayed to His Father.

Was there still time for Him to get away instead of staying in the garden where Judas and the others were sure to find Him? Could God have taken Jesus straight back to heaven so He wouldn’t have to suffer? Could Jesus have called down thousands of angels to defend Him? (Matthew 26:53).

As the Son of God, Jesus could have chosen not to die for us. He thought of the cruel death that awaited Him and wondered if His Father could come up with another way to save the world. But there was no other way! And because Jesus loves us so very much, He was willing to become the Passover Lamb for us and give His life to set us free (John 10:17-18).
