Meditate on: Proverbs 22:6 NASB

« Train up a child in the way they should go, even when they get older, they will not depart from it. »

Read: Proverbs 22:1-12 GNT

1 If you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation.

The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord made them both.

Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later.

Obey the Lord, be humble, and you will get riches, honor, and a long life.

If you love your life, stay away from the traps that catch the wicked along the way.

Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.

Poor people are slaves of the rich. Borrow money and you are the lender’s slave.

If you plant the seeds of injustice, disaster will spring up, and your oppression of others will end.

Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it.

10 Get rid of a conceited person, and then there will be no more arguments, quarreling, or name-calling.

11 If you love purity of heart and graciousness of speech, the king will be your friend.

12 The Lord sees to it that truth is kept safe by disproving the words of liars.

Understand

The survival of Christianity is threatened if we refuse to raise our children the godly way.

If that happens, we would have failed as parents.

All children are foolish, but firm correction will make them change.

It is important that we train children in the way of the Lord because whatever they learn early in life tends to remain with them for a very long time, if not forever.

This means that children will grow with knowledge, ignorance or half-truths.

What do you want them to grow with?

To have a future generation of true Christians, we must deliberately teach our children what God requires of them because soon, leadership will rest on their shoulders.

What does God require of His children?

1. Reverence and obedience

  • Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 says the duty of man is to fear God and obey Him.
  • We must teach the coming generation the fear of God which is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7).
  • They must get wisdom.

2. Work

  • 2 Thessalonians 3:10 says whoever will not work should not eat.
  • Tell them eating the food of idleness is not a mark of a Christian.

3. Trust

  • Human efforts shall fail (Psalm 127:1), hence they should be taught to depend solely on God.

4. Holiness

  • Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord. We must prepare them to be pure brides of Christ.

5. Love

  • Charity is the greatest of virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13).
  • Teach them to love like Christ, not just in words, but also in deed and in truth ( 1 John 3:18).

6. Give

  • If they love like Christ, they should also learn to give to God’s work and to the needy (Proverbs 11:25).

7. Evangelism

If we are faithful- as Christian parents, God will be pleased and a future generation of genuine Christians will be guaranteed.

Application: Parents and the Church should engage in conscious efforts to offer quality discipleship training for our children, teenagers and youth.
