Memorize: Hebrews 4:12a

« For the Word of God is alive and working. »

Read: Acts 18:1-4, 9-17

After preaching in Athens, Paul went to the city of Corinth. There he stayed with Aquila and Priscilla, who also made tents for a living like Paul did.

One night, the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision.

“Do not be afraid,” He said.

“Keep on speaking about Me, for I am with you. No one will attack you or harm you in any way.”

So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching people the Word of God.

When Gallio became the new governor, a group of Jews arrested Paul and took him to Gallio to be judged. They accused Paul of getting people to worship God in a way that was against their law. But Gallio became impatient with the Jews and said, “This man has not committed a crime. Sort out your own religious problems!”

And with that, Paul was set free. God had kept His promise!

How do I know which promises in the Bible are for me?

The Bible is filled with the promises of God: some were made to the Israelites of the Old Testament, some are for born-again believers and some promises are for everyone.

There are also personal promises, like the promise God made to Paul, to keep him from being harmed. And as we know, God did keep Paul safe while he was in Corinth. Does this mean that the promise God made to Paul has no meaning or value to us?

God’s written Word is also His living Word. He uses the Bible to speak to us personally, even though our situation may be quite different from the one in the Bible. That is the way God guides us—and that is what makes the Bibles so useful and exciting. When you ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word, the Holy Spirit makes a verse or passage come ‘alive’ with meaning—as if it was put there just for you.
