« “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! »
13 The law says we are under a curse for not always obeying it. But Christ took away that curse. He changed places with us and put Himself under that curse. The Scriptures say, “Anyone who is hung on a tree is under a curse.”
14 Because of what Jesus Christ did, the blessing God promised to Abraham was given to all people. Christ died so that by believing in Him we could have the Spirit that God promised.
Yesterday, we started to discuss the blessings from the victory at Calvary, and we identified two out of the numerous blessings that accrued to us from it.
Today, we shall be asking ourselves a couple of questions to better understand the implication of these blessings. These questions are:
– What is a Curse ?
– What is a Blessing ?
- A curse is a condition in which unseen forces that hinder progress attack a fellow, with the aim of destroying him or her.
Classic characteristics of a curse are found in Deuteronomy 28:15-20 GNT, the last verse of which reads
15 “But if you disobey the Lord your God and do not faithfully keep all His commands and laws that I am giving you today, all these evil things will happen to you:
16 “The Lord will curse your towns and your fields.
17 “The Lord will curse your grain crops and the food you prepare from them.
18 “The Lord will curse you by giving you only a few children, poor crops, and few cattle and sheep.
19 “The Lord will curse everything you do.
20 “If you do evil and reject the Lord, He will bring on you disaster, confusion, and trouble in everything you do, until you are quickly and completely destroyed
A lot of lessons are embedded in the Scripture above.
One, God does not witch-hunt anyone.
He would warn before placing a curse on anyone – just as He did in the case of Adam and Eve, though they still fell for the devil’s trick, leading to the fulfilment of the predicted curses.
Two, the Lord reveals the reason for a curse – disobedience to divine law, ungodliness and all wickedness associated with it.
- A blessing, on the other hand, is a result of unseen forces, summoned in heaven and sent to the earth to support the beneficiary to succeed, even where others are failing.
A classic example is Jacob’s blessing in Genesis 27:28-29 GNT which reads
« Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be those who bless you!” »
Beloved, if you desire the blessings of Calvary in your life, come to Jesus and truly surrender your life to Him.
His blessings will indeed prosper you without adding any form of sorrow (Proverbs 10:22).
Application – If you want to be blessed, come to Jesus by faith today.
