« Don’t trap yourself by making a rash promise to God and only later counting the cost »
1 My child, if you have put up security for a friend’s debt or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger
2 if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said—
3 follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased.
4 Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do.
5 Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.
The world, from the beginning, has been full of deceit.
This is why, today, the Lord is warning all His children to beware of being guarantors for people who would not keep their promises.
Some people have lost all their life savings because they stood as surety for people who defaulted in repaying bank loans.
Today’s memory verse reveals the folly of making enquiry after already vowing.
That action can have eternal implications; Romans 13:8 warns that we should owe no man anything except love. Ecclesiastes 5:5-6NKJV further says
« Better not to vow than to vow and not pay. Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands? »
God is warning us through today’s Scripture reading to avoid standing surety to those we do not know very well, unbelievers in general and particularly unstable or inconsistent ‘brethren’ in the Church.
This is because such people could turn out to be heartless foes when they begin to default.
Marriage vows are more serious, and as believers we must honor them.
There are many wolves in sheep’s clothing in the Church today- pretenders who take innocent souls to the altar deceitfully just to wreak havoc on the spiritual lives of their victims.
You must beware and take today’s warning seriously.
If you are among the deceivers in the Church, you must repent today, before the judgment of God comes upon you.
As a young person preparing for marriage, pay close attention to getting to really know your potential spouse very well.
- Do not forget: marriage is for better and for worse.
- It is better for you not to make a vow at all than to make one and then be seeking to annul it or get a divorce.
Be wary of presumptuous love affairs and love at first sight.
Take your time to investigate the life and background of the fellow you want to spend the rest of your life with.
I have always said “If love is blind, marriage would heal the blindness”.
Beloved, as children of God our integrity must never be questionable,
so before you commit yourself in any way, always exercise due diligence and seek God’s guidance.
Prayer focus – Please Lord, I seek Your guidance in all that pertains to me. Help me to always rely on Your leading before I make any decision, in Jesus’ name.
